Work Of The Humane Society Of The United States.
The Humane Society of the United States is involved in more than keeping animals which have been rescued for people to come and adopt. While the part of the HSUS’s work is to support the local animal shelters, the work it does encompasses more than that. To bring out the complex work the organization carries out using simple words, the organization’s motto is ‘Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty’.
Thousnds of species exist today in the world today. The HSUS work is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. HSUS does not only work in the U.S but has extended globally with some of its missions being to rescue sea animals. The animals rescued by the organization have been involved in racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research. The activities that the animals are involved are many and these are some of them.
It is the work of HSUS to work with pet owners in ensuring their safety and security and also providing the support to the other local animal shelters HSUS has also been in the forefront in pushing for pushing for pieces of legislation both locally and internationally. These laws are meant to curb animal cruelty. When disasters such as the Katrina have occurred, animals are always affected. In order to rescue animals in disaster cases, the HSUS is always prepared with a team that can travel to the affected areas whether locally or internationally. The HSUS has programs that ensures that home owners are educated about the backyard animals such as squirrels.
The history of animal welfare organizations has a long history and started way before HSUS was founded. The first one was the society for the prevention of cruelty of animals which was founded in 1886. This was the first organization to advocate for animal rights. More other organizations came up. Follwing a delegates which was carried out in 1887, the delegates agreed the organizations to come together and form the American Humane Association. In the AHA, there were disagreements among the members and this led to a split with those who left forming the current Humane society of the United States.
HSUS works to ensure that all cruelty against animals has been eliminated in the whole world. Among the first pieces of legislation was the one to fight against mistreatment of animals used for research. Many laws in the U.S have passed. The laws range from those protecting endangered species to those that make it illegal to mistreat research animals inhumanly.
